Rannok, a Dungeon Mastering Reader recently said something so obvious that I had never thought of it:
Even for villains I take a shine to, I never invest too much time in creating them until AFTER they survive the first encounter with the party.
Darn PCs.

Immutable D&D laws

In no specific order…

Players will act unexpectedly.
Players will make out-of-character comments.
Memorable quotes will be uttered.
Players will think their characters are invincible.
Combat with über-villains will anti-climactically end in 2 rounds.
When attacking a PC with less than 10hp the DM will roll a critical hit.
