D&D Sunday Morning Quiz - Which Edition?
Written by Yax - Published on June 22, 2008

DNDSMQ 06-22-08

This week’s quiz will test 2 things. First it will test your knowledge of the different D&D editions. And it will also test the new quiz A.I. - I’m dropping the psychological modifier. I realized that the bonus or penalty to the final score really depends on how the A.I. feels, not on how screwed up you are. I hope that 6+ months of negative psychological modifier won’t leave permanent marks on your psyche!

NOTE: Some e-mail clients and RSS readers aren’t able to submit your quiz answers to the website. If you’re reading this from an e-mail subscription or a feed reader you should head to Dungeon Mastering to take the quiz.

This week’s quiz - WHICH EDITION(S)?

PHB has a wizard fighting small winged creatures on the cover:

  • Basic D&D
  • AD&D, 1st edition
  • AD&D, 2nd edition
  • D&D 3.x
  • D&D 4

PHB has a big demonic altar on the cover:

  • Basic D&D
  • AD&D, 1st edition
  • AD&D, 2nd edition
  • D&D 3.x
  • D&D 4

Elf is a class:

  • Basic D&D
  • AD&D, 1st edition
  • AD&D, 2nd edition
  • D&D 3.X edition
  • D&D 4th edition

Warlord is a class:

  • Basic D&D
  • AD&D, 1st edition
  • AD&D, 2nd edition
  • D&D 3.X edition
  • D&D 4th edition

The edition that introduced the paladin class in its core books:

  • Basic D&D
  • AD&D, 1st edition
  • AD&D, 2nd edition
  • D&D 3.X edition
  • D&D 4th edition

Dragons are awesome:

  • Basic D&D
  • AD&D, 1st edition
  • AD&D, 2nd edition
  • D&D 3.X edition
  • D&D 4th edition

Which year was each edition published?

  • Basic D&D
  • AD&D 1st Edition
  • AD&D 2nd Edition
  • D&D 3.0
  • D&D 3.5
  • D&D 4

How great is Dungeon Mastering?

  • It’s just great.
  • It’s awesome.
  • It’s uber-awesome.
  • It’s red-dragon-awesome.

Fun, even if I tanked and scored only 49%. Disappointing.

Publication Dates did me in, and the tricksome first question!

One fussy note: Basic D&D is *not* the version published in 1973. The 1973 version is usually referred to as Original Dungeons & Dragons these days. Basic D&D most commonly refers to the 1981 Basic/Expert ruleset (aka Moldvay/Cook for its editors), though it can also mean the 1977 John Eric Holmes version or the 1983 Frank Mentzer edition. See Dungeons & Dragons, or the Basic Set and its sequels
