DNDSMQ January 18, 2009 : D&D Sunday Morning Quiz – Artifacts

Artifacts make life… interesting. If you’ve never seen panic and megalomania fighting to share the same face, ask your DM to run an artifact quest. If they seem unduly pleased with this suggestion, politely excuse yourself and run like the wind. (But just in case you can’t escape the DM’s twisted machinations, here’s a quiz to help polish your artifact lore.)

All the answers to this quiz can be found in the Dungeon Master’s Guide

NOTE: Some email clients and RSS readers can’t submit your answers to our website. You can go to Dungeon Mastering to take the quiz.

A character’s access to (and retention of) artifacts is entirely up to ____________.

  • the artifact itself
  • the fickle whims of fate
  • the size of the bribe being offered
  • the DM

Artifacts function a lot like ____________.

  • NPCs
  • Trainwrecks
  • Demigods
  • Instigators

Whatever their nature, all artifacts share one behavioral trait. What is it?

  • They move on.
  • They secretly hate you.
  • They openly hate you.
  • They demand subservience.

Artifacts are ____________ and they have their own motivations.

  • instigators
  • sentient
  • moody
  • 31337

Which if the following is NOT a famous artifact?

  • The Eye of Vecna
  • The Hand of Vecna
  • The Pinky Toe of Vecna
  • Wait. Is this a trick question?!

True or False: An artifact can’t be created or destroyed by any of the normal means available for other magic items.

  • True
  • False
  • I don’t know
  • Pfft. If I disbelieve an artifact, it will vanish. Right?

What can a PC do to make the Axe of Dwarvish Lords happy?

  • Gain a level.
  • Be a dwarf.
  • Slay a giant.
  • All of the above.

What can a PC do to make the Eye of Vecna angry?

  • Gain a level.
  • Possess the ability to cast arcane spells.
  • Kill an undead creature.
  • Use anti-evil eyedrops to get the red out.

The Invulnerable Coat of Arnd has all of the following goals, EXCEPT:

  • to find Arnd and make him put a coat on, for gods’ sake!!
  • to overthrow tyrants.
  • to prove itself against ever greater threats and challenges.
  • to attach itself to a hero who will be remembered in legend.

Fill in the blank: When its wielder performs actions in concert with its goals, an artifact becomes ____________, but when the wielder acts against the artifact’s wishes, its power ____________.

  • less powerful, increases
  • more powerful, increases
  • more powerful, diminishes
  • lazier, increases

I just spent the last few days scouring this section of the DMG, so I was pleased to see Artifacts as the subject of this week’s quiz. Why was I so focused on artifacts this week? Well, when they don’t include the Staff of the Magi in any of the books, so far, you just have to go and do it yourself. :)

If anyone is interested, I made my version (which I’m still reviewing for balance…yeah right…balance, heh) like this:

+6 Defensive Staff with the powers and properties of a ring of spell storing and a reliable staff (Check your Adventurer’s Vault for all three of these items) with the following change: All powers stored, retained must be Arcane powers. If the Staff is pleased, you can store up to 3 powers and don’t need to use action points to activate them, you get a +10 item bonus to Arcana checks, and you add 1 to any burst or blast while using the Staff (this stacks with feats like Resounding Thunder). If it is satisfied, you can store up to 2 powers, get a +5 item bonus to Arcana checks, and add 3 to the range of any ranged arcane powers while using the Staff. If unsatisfied, drop the enhancement to +5 and you can’t use the reliable power. If angered, drop the enhancement to +4 and you can’t use the spell storing power, either.

I’ve actually got five of these in my own campaign setting, and each one has special powers for satisfaction and pleasure, instead of the bonuses to checks and spell range/area increases. Now, we’ll see if anyone ever gets their grubby little paws on one of ’em! :)

  2. PurpleLemur says:

    Oh yeah, the concordance:

    Gain a level: +1d10
Use a new arcane power for the first time: +1
    Create a magic item (1/day): +1
    Master a new ritual (1/day): +2
    Gain a non-arcane multiclass feat: -2
Replace an arcane power with or gain a non-arcane power: -2
Spend a week without studying or practicing arcane abilities: -2
    Spend a month ” “: -5

And yes, of course, this is an Epic Level artifact. I personally wouldn’t let anyone under 24th level get one of these and would probably hold off until 27th level and have it move on when they fulfill their epic destiny…which would probably be Archmage. ;)

i did alright. should of cracked open the DM guide:b

  4. Jimmy says:

I got all of the questions right, but only a 92%?

  5. sturtus says:

Great quiz! My talking sword agrees.

  6. Janna says:

@ PurpleLemur: Thanks for the stats and the devious ideas. >:)

Good job, all. Sorry, Jimmy; I guess some right answers are better than others?

  7. Saragon says:

Hmm, 80% pre-adjustment. Not bad for someone who hasn’t cracked the 4E books in several months.

  8. Yax says:

@Jimmy: Yeah, not all answers are born equal. The quiz A.I. is notoriously fickle.

  9. Roger says:

Only 62%, but a pass, not to bad. When will I read the 4E books?

  10. Martin says:

ouin ouin 60% spa bein fort :-) mais sa passe fac jirai pas lire le DMG lol

  11. Darkskeleton says:

    104% total (100% + 4 A.I.).

Guess I read up on powerful magical things too much, but eh awesome things deserves awesome attention I suppose
