Written by Janna - Published on January 4, 2009

Janna discovered D&D at the age of 16, and she's been rolling the dice for 16 years. (You do the math.) She is fond of intelligent villains, drow society, and campaigns that explore the Dark Side.

DNDSMQ January 4, 2009 : D&D Sunday Morning Quiz – The Planes

Ah, monsters. You gotta love ’em. The final installment (for now) in our Monster Quiz series covers all kinds of creepy critters from the 4th Edition Monster Manual. (But you’ll find them in other editions, too.) Good luck on the quiz!

NOTE: Some email clients and RSS readers can’t submit your answers to our website. You can go to Dungeon Mastering to take the quiz.

I’m a large 4-legged creature. I keep grisly trophies and treasure in my lair. I often carry goblins into battle. Who am I?

  • A Wolf
  • A Dire Wolf
  • A Worg
  • A Guulvorg

I’m a cruel tyrant descended from a prehistoric race. I live in the jungle. My favorite passtimes include taking slaves, building secret temples, and plotting world domination. Who am I?

  • A Yuan-Ti
  • A Jungle Giant
  • A Dark Naga
  • A Githzerai

I like to snack on corpses, but I’ll eat anything that passes by. Some say I’m the result of a mad wizard’s experiment. My tentacles will paralyze you. Who am I?

  • A Grell
  • A Carrion Crawler
  • An Illithid
  • Cthulhu

I’m a belligerent, cave-dwelling carnivore. When I attack, I’m a triple-threat. I can fly, and my breath can be deadly. Who am I?

  • A Rage Drake
  • A Dragon
  • A Manticore
  • A Chimera

I’m a giant originally from the Feywild. I serve my rightful lords, the formorians. I’m not a stalker, but I’ve got my eye on you. Who am I?

  • An Ettin
  • A Cyclops
  • A Titan
  • A Fairy Giant

I’m no longer among the living. My immortal essence is stored in my weapon. I keep my combat skills *and* lead my own undead army. Who am I?

  • A Death Knight
  • A Ghast
  • A Wraith
  • A Ghoul Myrmidon

My identity is a very fluid concept. I make a great spy or assassin. Duplicity and subterfuge are my weapons of choice. Who am I?

  • A Werewolf
  • A Doppleganger
  • A Shadow
  • A Rakshasa

I talk and talk without really saying anything. The words I do say are disturbing. I’ve got eyes everywhere on my plasmic body. Who am I?

  • The Media
  • A Foulspawn
  • Gibberlings
  • A Gibbering Mouther

When I’m wild, I roam in herds. I don’t take bull from anyone. Once you smell my breath, you’ll be petrified. Who am I?

  • A Behemoth
  • A Basilisk
  • A Gorgon
  • A Hippogriff

10. Fill in the blank: A ____________ is a huge, deadly creature that hoards treasure and breathes a world of hurt upon its enemies. When one decides to go the undead route, it becomes a ____________. (comma-separated, not case-sensitive)

    I still think that my answer for Question 10 should have got more points “Dragon,bitch to kill”

    Okay.. So I know D&D monsters better than I know what is going on in the real world….

  4. James Hepler says:

    Cool quiz. I scored better than I thought I would.

  5. Chris Arthur says:

    I’ve been a DM for about 20 years and I recently picked up almost all the 4th edition books. I’m currently reading the 4th Edition Manual of the Planes which helped with the giant question :)

    Geese, I’m not sure if I should be proud or ashamed ;P

    Nice Quiz by the way.

  7. Fishercatt says:

    Yay Cthulhu!

    I one time had my players hunting after a Black Dragon/Bone Dragon. The one PC who could read was little ~special~ and after he read the sheriff’s description of the mighty black beast with ribs of white he told the rest of the party they were after a zebra. So they brought everything they needed with them to kill a zebra.
    The DM won that game, and Dead Dragons are the mosterest fun to play.

    Impressive! You know almost everything about monsters. May I remind you that hanging out with other human beings can be as fun as reading the monster manual?

    I do hang out with humans, sometimes, when my wife takes my books away . . . lol!

  10. Janna says:

    @ Andrew: In the role-playing world, pride and shame walk hand in hand. ;)

    @ Nathanial: Nothing’s as fun as reading the Monster Manual. Especially when you have a few drinks and start making up captions for the monsters….

    Grats to all the high scorers!

    Holy Githyanki! How many times have you read the Monster Manual?
    ~~~~
    w00t. Actually, I read the lore aloud to my wife as sort of a bedtime story. She picks the page numbers.
  12. Ross says:
    I would’ve gotten a perfect score, but I spelled dracolich with a hyphen :(
