D&D Sunday morning quiz: Weapons!
Posted by Yax on March 3, 2008

DNDSMQ 03-03-08

The last quiz was waaaaaay too easy - with more than a dozen readers scoring over 100%. This week, the quiz strikes back!

All the answers are taken from the 3.5 core rulebooks. I’m a not responsible if you choose a wrong answer based on rules from Monster Manual 14: Prehistoric Invertebrates.

NOTE: Some e-mail clients aren’t able to submit your quiz answers to the website. If you’re reading this from an e-mail subscription you should head to Dungeon Mastering to take the quiz.

This week’s quiz - Weapons!

A lady halfling ranger with a strength score of 14 is fighting monsters with a keen longsword +3. If she is under the effect of a Reduce Person spell, how much damage does she score on a successful hit?

  • 1d4+4
  • 1d6+4
  • 1d6+5
  • 1d8+5

A shortbow has a range of 60ft. Is there a range penalty for shooting at an enemy who’s exactly 60ft. away.

  • Yes
  • No
  • It depends. Is your DM evil?

What’s up with spiked gauntlets?

  • Well, they make you look cool.
  • Well, if you get disarmed, it’s better than punching someone with your bare knuckles.
  • Well, I have to say both.

  • Heavy Mace
  • Heavy Flail
  • Heavy Crossbow
  • Heavy Pick
  • Greatclub
  • Greatsword

What the hell is an urgrosh?

A wizard pissed off a gladiator and is now stuck in a net. What’s the DC of the concentration check needed to cast a spell?

  • 15
  • 20
  • 25
  • 30

What is wrong with this weapon: Vicious Dragonbane Golden Nunchaku +5?

  • Its total magic bonus is higher than 10.
  • No wizard would spend XP to create this weapon.
  • Gold is a soft metal. You can’t fight with that.
  • I can’t answer this without the presence of my rules lawyer.

IMPOSSIBLE QUESTION - How much damage would be dealt by a successful strike on a dragon by a human monk (str 18) with a Vicious Dragonbane Golden Nunchaku +5? (Answer without whitespace. Example: 1d4+2)

How great is Dungeon Mastering?

  • It’s just great.
  • It’s awesome.
  • It’s uber-awesome.
  • It’s red-dragon-awesome.

I have been thoroughly shamed and must now fall upon my sword….

  2. There’s a catch with “golden” Because there are heavy weapons in FrCS that deal damage as a weapon one size bigger. Those a called Golden sometimes…

    And my score was ninety-smth % Don’t remember (=

Astounding! Almost perfect! Your score is so good you should use it in a pickup line!”

One tiny issue with the “heaviest weapon” question–the spiked chain doesn’t show up in the answers list, but it’s tied for weight with the heaviest one. So both should be valid answers.

Consistency isn’t my strong point in this quizzes. I rolled an one on my knowledge check.

  5. 90/100
    97% after randomosity.

And I have a correction to the quiz.

Heaviest Weapon has two correct answers. A Spiked Chain (included in the question, but not in the answers) is also 10 lbs.

Congratulations! You are quite knowledgeable! Do you even need a PHB when you create a character?.”

I was thrown by the last question for two reasons: one, I saw “golden” and applied to rules from Magic of Faerun, which bumps the damage up to 1d8 from 1d6; and two, I didn’t count the damage dealt to the monk, although having reread the question I now realize you never said “damage dealt to the dragon”, just “damage dealt”. You got me!

  7. I’m was ok at at being a wizard, but you guys see what I’m good at

Not bad. I expected to do better, though. I forgot about reduction’s strength penalty, but I did get urgrosh and heavy flail. :)

When my halfling wielded his warmace, he dealt 1d10 base damage with the one-handed exotic weapon…I’m fairly certain that that is a heavier weapon if we proportion it with the others…

Though I don’t have my Complete Warrior in front of me…

Almost missed the Impossible ? thinking of unarmed attack first not the Nunchaku… And where is the Spiked Chain

  16. The spiked chain is gone. It wasn’t meant to be there in the first place.

  17. Hmm, I did a good job.

Wow… That must hurt. It’s ok - I’m sure your parents still love you.

Shees! As a DM I hope my Players don’t see this. I can usually tell them where to find obscure rules without a thought. Maybe I need to switch to 4e.

I know I’m way late, but this contest was rigged. I don’t think that bludgeoning weapons can be vicious and an Urgrosh is and axe and a spear, so a made up word was a better answer I think; but I might just be in a surly mood today. Last night we played D&D and drank and cheered on our beloved Gary Gygax, we will miss him. I never got to shake his hand, do you think he would mind if we animated him?

Also penny arcade has a eulogy to him, check it out! Its sweet yet tacky!

  21. Thanks for the link.

About the vicious weapons - I don’t remember seeing anything about the bludgeoning type in there.

About the urgrosh - maybe you’re right.

About your surly mood - well, the quiz trash-talks you if you don’t score well. I’m asking for it, really… And enjoying every second of it! :P

Hmmmm. . . Extra credit for being a psycho? Hey, I’ll take it. I think that was pretty good for not getting out the rule books.
