Geeks Next Door on DM #6

Thoughts from the Geeks Next Door

The GND crew agreed to give their thoughts and comments on the strips they write for Dungeon Mastering. Let us know what you think by leaving a comment. I hope you enjoyed the webcomic.

JESSI – There’s a lesson to be learned: pick your target carefully before you try to steal stuff.  Also, skull tattoos means bad news (as far as generic villains go, anyway).  Since we handled the discussion of favorite system versions pretty well, I think we can answer another difficult question: what is your favorite game setting?  I bet I know Matt’s answer: it begins with “G” and ends with “reyhawk”!

MATT – Yes, I am a fan of the Greyhawk setting (it’s definitely just a coincidence that this game is set in a Free City of some sort).  My favorite setting would have to be Krynn, but Greyhawk just seems a lot more open in many ways.  I guess that means that Greyhawk is my favorite to run, but Dragonlance would be my favorite to play in.  So, sorry, Jessi, but you’d end up losing that bet.

MAGGIE – What is the Red Dragon Inn?!  It sounds like a bad restaurant in a theme park!  Ooh, or the Ren Faire, where the waitresses have crappy British accents, and the only things to eat are turkey legs and beer.  …wait, that doesn’t sound so bad.  More beer than turkey legs, please.

    Did I ever mention I have a crush on Maggie? A healthy one. Not a “staring-at-her-from-a-distance” crush.

  2. GroovyTaxi says:

    @Yax : Matt and Jessi weren’t able to match her with Barry, so now are they gonna try to match her up with Yax? Sounds like a future plot leak to me…

    Finally, I’m glad to see the game is finally starting after so much waiting (well, I waited!). The beginning sounds pretty good and true to life.There’s always some guy in the party who took sleight of hand just to steal from random targets. That person ends up being caught half of the time and when it doesn’t happen, he/she just ends up stealing a few coins from a defenseless peasant.

  3. Yax says:

    @GroovyTaxi: You’re not the only one waiting. I’m always stoked to see get a notification that the new article is up!

  4. I like the inn logo. Sexy.

    @Expy the red dragon:

    No lies, seriously?
    I’d imagined it having sunglasses.

  6. @Crimmy: Yes, it would have been sweet. On the other hand, it would probably have been an anachronism. That place seems to be at the skull-tattoo-on-the-forehead stage of fashion.

    I’ve played D&D in a few settings… Dragonlance, Forgotten Realms… but my all-time favorite setting is a home-brewed world. The world of ALCOHOL! The usual starting country is Scotch, we move through the countries of Vodka, Wine, and Rum, but somehow always end up in the Ale Empire, home to Beer and Lager. All of the cities in each country are brand names of the type of alcohol of their country, for instance, Dewar is in the land of Scotch, being a type of scotch. Our DM is a fantastic artist who draws out the maps of each country. He is so very skilled! Every D&D group should have an artist! ;)

    XD lols! Much hearts for Barry which equals extra luck for him, cause obviously, he needs it! XD GAWD I love Barry! It’s a perfect and typical Barry scene. He goes in, trying to be all cool and sneeky like, to fail miserably! XD I totally wish I had a Barry plushie to huggle! ^_^

  9. GroovyTaxi says:

    I just noticed the place is called The Red Dragon Inn. It’s an actual medieval restaurant in Montreal I go to every once in a while with friends. It’s expensive, but the food is orgasmic, the bards are awesome and the general feel is great. I gotta say Red Dragon is a pretty generic name, so I don’t think there’s any link, but still…

  10. Rahcaz says:

    My fav was constructed by our DM in a rendition of discworld (terry pratchett elephants and turtles and all). It’s part my fav cause i like pratchett and another part cause i done blewz it up :D

  11. Rahcaz says:

    oh yeah forgot to meantion in the last one why it blew up ( i have to give backstory sorry)
    *Ahem* Discworld(tm)(c)(r) was a very fertile and magical realm. Unfortunately because of it’s very magical nature they had a lot of amges rising to power to try and overthrow the government. After about the 123rd failed attempt to raise the Realm Guards to the ground. The guards had had enough and decided to destroy the magical link. It had worked, no more trouble rose agaisnt them. What they did not realize was that without the magic the land started to die. So it was our job to enlist the powers of the dietys to re-establish the magic, those chose a group and two champins. One of law and the other of chaos(me). When the link was being formed i panicked because a giant swirling vortex was pulling me away( i rolled a 1) and due to my actions a rift tore apart the realm and and shot us 70 years in the past. Also that’s why i don’t take a major part anymore hehe.

    @Expy the red dragon:

    Well, that’s true.

    Punt taken.

  13. BigBearBrian says:

    Kulthea, aka the Shadow World. ICE’s old setting for Rolemaster. LOTS of good, deadly times there. :-)

  14. DandDGuy says:

    I have played lots of games of many years but, my all time favorite Epic of Good vs Evil is a toss up between Dragonlance and Star Wars just for shear scope of playable area.
