It was my first time DMing, and it was "Spire of Terror" (or something along those lines) and the first encounter was with cochroaches as they were descending into the Underdark. It was supposed to be an easy encounter to get them into the game, but it ended up being about an hour battle, with the cleric using nearly all o his healing spells, the Half-Orc barbarian almost dying, and basically the party was completely decimated. They didn't even get the treasure hidden in the coves. Their final battle with the Medusa and the bloodhulk was easier than these cochroaches.

My favorite fight? Has to be back when I played second edition. Our group had been sent to collect white dragon scales from a glacier, and we ran into a live specimen, Being only secon level, we, of course, decided it wou;ld be smart to stay and fight. I was the only survivor that day...

Just had an awesome fight in my world. The pc's had been captured by a Pirate Lord while trying to rescue a prophetess that he also held. Anyway they were about to be thrown from the priate lord's ship into the sea as a sacrifice to the "Sea Goddess" (only seen as a huge dark shape moving under the water) as a blessing for the forced marriage between the priate lord and before mentioned prophetess. All the sudden while eveyone on board is distracted by the unveiling of the more than humanly possbile beauty of the prophetess, the very frustrated pc's are freed and re-armed by a halfling henchman of the guy who double crossed them and got them captured in the first place. The battle quickly ensues (aided by the sorc who had turned invisible and escaped capture then used illusion to gain entry to ship). It was a glorius battle, in which the pc's used eveything at their disposal ,all their spells and even all ther potions were used and it still came down tot he dice. They won but it could have gone very badly. Their sword and board fighter went down, and in the same round the two-handed fighter got down to 2 hp luckily he stayed up and still got his atacks that round which dropped the pirate lord and turned the tide of the battle. Another 2 points of damage and I might have killed them all. Very memorable.

Hay, Jessi, Matt, and Maggie do you Guys remember Christie Golden's Book "Vampire of the Mists". If you old school like myself you probably do. Well, Christie Golden happened to be in our shop that day looking for Ideas for a new novel that she was working on. Anyway, the group that I was a player in at that time was in ravenloft and the DM was running the AD & D 2nd ED adventure with lord Strahd von Zarovich and she was interested in what we were doing so we let her sit in and watch. THIS IS NO JOKE IT ACTUALLY HAPPENED, I HAVE THE PICS AROUND IN MY STASH SOMEWHERE! Jander Sunstar the character that I was playing was going to be the main character in her first book which was the above mentioned "Vampire of the Mists" That fight at the end of the adventure was the best one I have ever had and its no joke, my character Jander was the main character in the book and I still have the original copy signed by Christie Golden to this day.

My favorite fight was my first attempt at running a D&D 4 session.

Basic setup was a 60ft room wide, by 90ft long room, a narrow (barely five foot)path runs along the outside of the room, the center of the room has fallen through to the cellar below. Some of the column supports from the wine cellar below still hold up, so people can try to jump across that way if they want.. the path on the right-side will crumble with any weight on it, about mid-way through the room. no lights in the room.

The far side of the room some critters (goblins?) with darkvision hang out behind a barricade made of the dining tables. 3 brutes to block off movement around the pathway, like 6 ranged to harass the party, and a controller to basically screw with the party. after three people get in the room, the ambush happens. To mitigate the darkness, the wizard casts light on a rock, and throws it across the room.

Long story short, the tank got stunned/dazed, fell through the floor to the cellar area, and incapacitated. The light stone got thrown back and forth (as the goblins' main advantage was darkvision), like 8 times, and the party used all of their dailies and about half of their Healing surges. The party ended up just barely defeating the goblins.

First fight in the dungeon too. The end fight actually was anticlimactic by comparison.
