IGT’s Dungeons & Dragons Themed Video Slots

Among the intellectual properties associated with nerd and geekdom, there’s no doubt that Dungeons & Dragons is one of the most recognizable. As a testament to its popularity, DnD is credited to being a major influence not just for other table-top games but also for movies, television, video games, and pop-culture in general. Leveraging the franchise’s popularity among gamers (and the general public alike), IGT (WagerWorks) has recently come up with a number of video slots with themes based on D&D’s exciting lore. Interestingly, the company managed to develop these video slots thanks to its partnership with Konami Gaming, Inc which has the license for DnD branded slot machines since 2013. With that said, are these three titles doing Garry Gygax’s work any justice and more importantly, are they any good as video slots?

Dungeons & Dragons – Treasures of Icewind Dale

Dungeons & Dragons Icewind Dale slot is perhaps one of the most popular locations in the equally popular DnD Forgotten Realms campaign setting. Outside of the board game, it has been featured in books as well as a video game released in 2002 that bears its name. Dungeons & Dragons – Treasures of Icewind Dale is one of the first video slots by IGT based off of the franchise and was released around 3 years ago. While it might not be new, the video slot is definitely still worth playing thanks to its graphics and gameplay. The video slot has 5 reels, 3 rows, and 30 betting lines with symbols that reference heroes such as Drizzt Do’Urden. For gameplay, players will get to enjoy two bonus features. The first of these is the stacked reels feature which is activated on every spin and the other one is the free spins feature that’s triggered when a Bag of Dice symbol appears on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th reels.

Dungeons & Dragons – Fortress of Fortunes

Like Treasures of Icewind Dale, Dungeons & Dragons Fortress of Fortunes is also replete with symbols that reference heroes and events from the franchise. In terms of aesthetics, players will love the video slot’s graphics as well as its animations. Aside from this, the title also has outstanding background music that helps set the theme for the adventure that awaits players when they play. As for gameplay, the video slot has 5 reels, 3 rows, and 20 paylines for players to place their bets on. Helping players improve their chances of winning is the video slot’s lone bonus feature. Once triggered, players will get free spins and will then be transported to the Fortress of Fortune where they can get increased multipliers, additional free spins, and many other surprises.

Dungeons & Dragons – Crystal Caverns

Last but definitely not the least in IGT’s Dungeons and Dragons series of video slots is Crystal Caverns. The video slot is likely set in the World of Greyhawk campaign’s Beyond the Crystal Cave module. Much like the first two titles in the series, this video slot also has great aesthetics and gameplay. Graphics-wise, the video slot’s symbols (especially those of the heroes) are beautifully rendered in addition to having smooth animations. When it comes to audio, players will undoubtedly find themselves getting immersed thanks to the video slot’s haunting yet upbeat fantasy-inspired background music. The 5 reel, 3 row video slot has 20 pay lines while also offering players two bonus features. Similar to Treasures of Icewind Dale, Crystal Caverns has free spins. It’s other feature is called Tumbling Reels and can activate every time a spin results in the appearance of a winning combination.

Will there be more Dungeons & Dragons themed video slots?

The Dungeons & Dragons series of video slots have generally high ratings from a number of independent casino gaming portals. With that said, one of the issues that most players have of these video slots have nothing to do with gameplay or its faithfulness to the DnD lore. Rather, the issue is with regard to availability. Simply put, IGT doesn’t allow players from some regions of the globe to enjoy these video slots. While blocking players from certain regions isn’t entirely new, it’s still disappointing to not be able to play even a demo version of these video slots. Hopefully, the recently announced cross-licensing agreement with Konami (June 2017) would gradually allow more people around the world to enjoy the DnD video slot experience.
