Play D&D like it’s 1999!
Written by Yax - Published on July 20, 2007

I do a lot of research on the web. A lot. Professionally, I am a computer programmer. As a hobby, I write this blog. Both lead me to spend dozens of hours every weeks scouring the Internet for information.

I’ve noticed that almost all Dungeons & Dragons related websites look like crap. They look like they were built in 1999. You’d think that with a majority of D&D enthusiasts being geeks, more top-end websites and applications would be published. Even the official website is borderline presentable in my professional opinion.

Maybe the reason is all players & DMs have a hobby they love. They just don’t want to invest in a non-profitable project on the web. But still. I stumble up hundreds of great non-profit websites and blogs every year.

Am I the only one who noticed that? Can anyone point me to a truly extraordinary website in the D&D world?

Well, the WotC website definitely had some improvements design-wise after the big announcement.

As for exceptional websites, difficult to say. Mine has random Ralph Wiggum quotes on it. That should count for something, right?

(I like to think it’s a pretty good design, as well. Unfortunately it’s based off a template, so I’m only responsible for a small part of that design. Though I did hack a fair amount of CSS and PHP to get things looking right.)
