@nosician, i share your worries with the ardent, and subsequent character classes. While i like the idea of every power source having acess to the four combat roles i don't find it necessary.

I would prefer every class to really feel unique and special, but i'm sure their are people out there who will enjoy it and as Nicholas stated, flavour wise the Ardent is very interesting and i'm a flavour person so i'll probably enjoy it.

At minimum at least we are getting some great races to play with in PHB3.

Regarding the Ardent - I just get the sinking feeling with a lot of the new classes that they are simply filling logical gaps. You have 4 combat roles defined in the game, so for each power source, you make up a new class. So of course you need the psionic version of the warlord (leader), just like you'll need a psionic defender, controller, and striker.

If that's true, it just seems very dull because nothing is actually unique and different. This is a problem that I think 4E can become victim to in various places, where a lot of things are quickly reduced to a block of stats.

But I hope I'm wrong, because I do like 4E.

@Pangalin: Shipman has said that what he does is a labor of love, which makes sense since I'm sure he doesn't make much money of it. But I also don't understand how selling a game that was released for free to rob innocent gamers could be a labor of love. It is kind of a twisted reasoning.

The logic at play here eludes me. If you're the kind of low-down slimy jerk who's willing to make his living by illegally exploiting the hard work of others, then why in the world would you go into RPG PUBLISHING. Even the biggest players in the industry are hardly raking in what anyone would call big bucks.

If you just want to make your money by being an amoral, thieving dirtbag you could almost certainly line your wallet faster and with less effort just by shoplifting.
