Nerd Watching: The Road to Gen Con

Well the buzz in the blogs and the industry this week has all been about a single topic. Everyone is talking about the run-up to Gen Con, typically with a blending of panic and excitement. Around here is no exception. Yax went last year and will be returning again this year. I’ll be attending my first Gen Con (and first con in general!) this year.

If You’re Going

I’d love to offer you a deep font of knowledge about con going, but I can’t. I’ve been working hard to acquire wisdom from other sources though. Stephen Radney-MacFarland’s “Save My Game” this month is chock full of Gen Con and general con survival tips. Unfortunately, they are only accessible to Insider subscribers. Our friend the Chatty DM dropped a tips on his twitter, he’s never steered me wrong before. He recommends “Pack water bottles and compact High Energy foods like Granola Bars or Trail Mix.” And reminds us to “Respect the 1-2-3 rule . take at least 1 Shower per day, have 2 full meals and min 3 hours of sleep.” If you have any con survival tips to impart, please share them in the comments! I could use them and I’m sure there are many con newbies in the same boat.

If you’re at a loss for planned events at the con, check out blogs and websites for the people you like in the industry. Some have been kind and organized enough to post their schedules. I know that I cribbed a few things off of James Wyatt’s event list. Although I’m told you don’t need to plan ahead a lot. Even just wandering around there is plenty to do at the con.

If you’re going to be at Gen Con, come say hi! We both have our pictures in the sidebar and our new video blog has put my face out there. If you recognize us, don’t be shy. Come on over and chat. We love to hear from our readers!

If You’re Not Going

Fear not! Dungeon Mastering is going to do our very best to make the Gen Con home game as great as can be. Next week’s Nerd Watching will be coming to you straight from Indy. I’ll keep an eye out for all the big news and announcements from the con and share them with you. There’s even supposed to be an announcement about the next 4e campaign setting. We’re also expecting several more articles about the things we do at Gen Con. Plus I’ll be bringing my camera, so keep an eye out on our new video blog. I will try to bring you footage of the con and record some blog entries straight from Indy.

The Non-Con News

You may remember the shoe contest I mentioned previously on Nerd Watching. Well, the votes are in and the winners have been picked. You can view and pre-order the winning designs here. You long ordeal of not having Goblin Stompers on your feet is almost at an end. Sadly, the winning shoes are only available up to size 12 with leaves me Stomper-less.

Are you going to Gen Con? What are your convention survival tips?

@Chatty DM is fun to follow on twitter. @GeeksDreamGirl too.

I try to schedule a power nap after lunch to have enough energy to survive the late evenings. I’m getting old.

It might be too late for this tip but reserve your hotel room in advance or try to rent a house with 5-6 friends.

  4. Expy says:

If you’re going to larp, wear a red dragon costume. You will be a hit with the ladies!

“The forums account associated with this email address has been deactivated for violation of the Code of Conduct, specifically section Four, Promoting illegal Activities.”

My forum account got a 3-day ban because I told people to remove the copyright notice from the images produced by the Monster Builder. The copyright at the bottom of each image very clearly gives WotC/Hasbro the rights to any monster you create and publish using the monster builder. That is theft of your rights, a violation of your copyright and is illegal.

Send email to WotC customer service and tell them to remove the copyright notice at the bottom of the Monster Builder exported images.
