Dungeons & Dragons 4th edition

This is it. The moment we all dreaded is here. We will soon feel like all our 3rd edition books are not as cool as they used to be. Wizards is launching D&D 4th edition soon. An announcement will be made at GenCon this afternoon.

Here is an excerpt from the press release:

The 4th Edition rules emphasize faster game play, offer exciting new character options, and reduce the amount of “prep time” needed to run the game. D&D Insider includes a character creator that lets players design and equip their D&D characters, dungeon- and adventure-building tools for Dungeon Masters, online magazine content, and a digital game table that lets you play 24/7 on the Internet — the perfect option for anyone who can’t find time to get together.

Here is the complete press release.

I’m personally stoked. I was considering reviewing my grappling rules but there’s no point now because WotC will release a new set of rules in less than a year. And while the old 3rd books won’t seem as cool, they will still be useful. Only the PG and DMG usually go down the drain when a new edition is released. Everything is easily adaptable.

We’ll know more about this very soon! Stay tuned.

Man now I know why the books where this cheap on Amazon. But the digital game tablet seems pretty cool in the situation that we are now.

  2. Yax says:

That would definitely explain the big sale on Amazon.com!

  3. Phil Smith says:

I’m still not sure what to make of the next edition. Of course, it’s going to make quite a difference to how the approach with my own site: do I continue making stuff for the old edition? Upgrade to the new one (if it’s OGL)? Develop a new system? Shift the focus to the JavaScript/AJAX tools? A whole lot of my material is going to have to change…

  4. Yax says:

Maybe you should ask the omniscient lavatory!

  5. Phil Smith says:

I tried. It’s blocked. I think it choked while laughing.

  6. Phil Smith says:

Just read my last post. Ye gods, my grammar is atrocious today.

  7. Yax says:

It’s ok. The internet readers are used to much worse.

  8. Stûnibu says:

I think i might b the only one that doesnt want a new adition!! it means that everyt hing will change nd ill have 2 learn all over again! y cant tey just exspand on 3.5!!!!

will most places just stop selling 3.5 nd start with 4th??

i only started playing with 3.5 nd the idea of ita ll changing is upseting…:P

    Who cares really.
I am not even vaguely interested in 4e. You know it will make little or no difference as the OGL can not be withdrawn, so the community will keep 3.5 alive

There is still some nice changes they want to do in the 4th edition. Races would have level as well as classes and they finally did something with the fighter.

I’m sure a lot of people feel like that. And if you are one of them you can stock up on 3.5 sourcebooks right now. They’re getting cheaper!

  12. Stûnibu says:

well im glad that not every one is goign to suddenly stop playing and talking bout 3.5e spose it wont be to different anyway! race level?? sonds to confusing for me! but ill be intersted in see how it works! and cheaper! thats an upside books r exspencive for a high schooler like me!

  13. John H. says:

Beware! Those electronic features sound cool, but will they really happen? Remember when 3rd edition was released and it came with that cool (but really overblown, poorly designed and graphic extravagant) character generation program? And how Wizards claimed people’d still be able to buy a suite of D&D assistance programs?

Yeah, those became vaporware remarkably quickly. I still nurse a grudge against them for that.

  14. Yax says:

I was pumped too about the character generator but after using it for a short while I figured it had become obsolete.

Hopefully they have learned from their mistakes.

  15. Taylor says:

Alright, am I stupid here, or does this sound like the end of table top rpgs?
I watched the interview, and did my research, and I’m not impressed. It really seems that they are pushing the “high fantasy” end of things, and not focusing on game quality or story.
A good example would be “racial levelling”… it sounds lame. As a creature gains experience, it gains new powers? How does that make -any- sense.
You could throw the “it’s a fantasy game” comment in there, but let’s look at realism for a minute. I don’t know the kind of players that read this forum – you could all be playing half-ogre/half-minotaurs that spend their entire time looting dungeons with little plot advancement. If you are, and you enjoy that sort of game – there is nothing wrong with that. Roleplaying is a personal experience, and preference.
But for those of you who do run complex stories, and weaving plots in an environment that somewhat resembles life on “earth”, then it seems to me that they are pushing you aside and focusing more on high magic/high fantasy gaming. This is who this post is directed at, and again, I don’t mean any offense to those who enjoy the “kick in the door” style of play.
Another issue is the online gaming aspect. I know that it’s not an MMORPG, but a big part of roleplaying is the social element. Having friends over, sitting around and enjoying one another’s company. By enabling players and the GM to “get together to play” online, seems to be defeating the whole reason people play roleplaying games.
Seriously consider this when considering switching to DnD 4th Ed. Again, I’m going to emphasize that I don’t mean any offense with this post – but I also want to press that those of us who want less “fantasy” and better rules should let WoTC know. Don’t settle with their vision of your fantasy – 99% of the time, your vision is far better than any crap they put out.

    My two cents.
    T.
