Take ranks in knowledge: engineering, alchemy, & seigecraft. Get enough stuff to blow it up from outside, and spend the rest of the game sifting through the rubble. Don't sift too quickly, wait a day or so to make sure the wizard has failed his fort save & his protective spells are down.

when in doubt, check the ceiling, but not directly. never will I forget that... thing... I want to say... whispering wall? mage went insane and we had to kill him. also, long, dark corridors ALWAYS have traps, it's a law of the universe. Our DM seems to be very strange, even by d&d standards... quite commonly touching shiney objects ends up with our genders and races switched... *scratches head* avoid glowing water? sometimes you get that tingley feeling deep inside yourself that says.... 'something's just not right here'... if something seems too easy, you're probably going to walk into a room full of lvl. 20 great flameskulls.

that is probably all I can say without re-capping the last 5 saturdays spent in a vaguely creepy basement...

Meh. Wizard's towers aren't so bad. Just don't read anything! Explosive Runes are a pain in the butt.

And as always in this type of situation... make the rogue go first! :)

Hmmm.... helpful hints for a wizard's tower. Now THERE'S a loaded question if i ever heard one.

Well first of all, entering a wizard's tower is like walking into a wolve's den covered in bacon plate armor (mmmm.... the armor thats yummy AND gives you +5 against ice elementals!). If you see something shiney and interesting then don't touch it, don't go near it and don't even look at it. Run from it like food from a bulimic! Just because it looks like a harmless enchanted dingus, doesn't mean that it's not the prison of some ungodly ultimate evil that's hellbent on destroying your plane of existence.

Also, sharp, metallic objects of a hurtful nature can only do so much against arcane magical critters. What ya need is something (or someone) along the lines of being like a giant magical club with nails in it. Remember, the only useful wizard is a loaded wizard. Otherwise, he's only there to carry the goods.

Remember too that just because it looks safe, it generally isn't. One idea is to summon some sort of critter and send it in front of you. If it's soft, fluffy and cute, EVEN BETTER! those things attract trouble like waving candy in front of a pack of ravenous, rabid psychoctic children.

FINALLY, last but not least, never get into any strange portals. It's worse than spilling a woman's alcohol (I can never get bloodstains out of D&D manuals...).

Now how do I know about all of this? Well, for one thing, I play nothing but wizards and know how they think. it's all 98% insanity, 1% curiosity, and 1% stupidity.
