Reigning in the Dog Days of Summer

Written by MythicParty - Published on July 20, 2012

Well it’s been a bear of a few weeks behind the scenes at DMing.  Keith Baker had a cross-country move, so his Game of Thrones-related Question Keith piece is waiting until all the boxes are unpacked.  Meanwhile I failed my save versus poison ivy, and it was hard to finish the Xbox GoT game for Console Cleric with an eye swollen shut .  But I did get to do a pretty good pirate impression.  Lastly, Darkwarren head a death in the family- his Dwarven magus Doddor Kotrigun was killed by lightning bolts from a kobold sorcerer.  Also, there was something about a new baby boy joining his clan.

While we re-set things with the writing staff, we want to offer our readers a few cool things:

A) you may have seen the new puzzle from Krys: http://www.dungeonmastering.com/campaigns-adventures/scrolls-of-destiny-weapons-for-hire-a-game-of-thrones-puzzle It has gotten some very nice positive feedback, but we want to know if anyone can solve it.  So be the 1st person to  post the correct solution (as determined by the puzzle mistress herself) & you’ll win a download of either Scrolls of Destiny OR the sequel, Scrolls of Destiny 2. This is going to be a standing contest each time Krys creates a puzzle.

B) Post the best way a DM could use this puzzle in their game (also determined by the puzzle mistress herself) &  you’ll win a copy of your choice of one of the above E-books.  So another way to win.  And again, another standing contest.

C) To help us create an upcoming DMing column, our friends at G2 Collectibles and Hobbies were cool enough to sell us a very rare OOP gaming book at the normal MSRP cost instead of for our first born son like it was on eBay.  And in keeping with the  concept of Christmas in July, they’re passing along some exclusive coupons to you guys-

  • Through July 31st use DMCOM20 on 1 order, for 20% off $20 or more.  Usable only once like Bead of Force.
  • During July, August, & September use DMCOM5 to get 5% off $5 or more as many times as you want
  • Like G2 on Facebook to receive occasional new item updates and offers;  Per them, “we don’t do a lot of updating, but sometimes we’ll post deals or new in stock items.”

We’ll be back to the writing in just a few rounds.  Meanwhile, thanks for being a reader of DungeonMastering.com & please enjoy the above promotions/contests- plus some other ones coming right down the pipe.

I’ve solved it. Do I post the solution here or it is better if I e-mail you?

  2. I haven’t. But then I suck at logic puzzles, so it’s no big surprise. As to how to use it in a game, my only thought would be for my players to give it to me, and then try and complete the adventure without a pesky GM throwing monsters and stuff at them, since he’s still trying to solve a damned puzzle.

Yes, please post all puzzle guesses & ideas in the comments section under the specific puzzle. Krys will periodically check, letting you guys know how you’re doing.

The ‘1st correct guess’ prize goes until there is a correct solution- so some of these contests could be very short, others may go on for awhile. Just like what could happen if a group of players were trying to solve one.

The ‘best way to use this’ contests run until Krys has posted up a new puzzle- she’ll announce the winner from the previous riddle right before she introduces the new one. We want as many ideas for DMs as possible, so these will go longer.

Thanks for pointing out the needed specifics.
