Top 10 ways to get pumped up for your next D&D game

If you’re like me you might experience a lack of motivation to sit down and write all your great ideas on paper to turn them into an equally great D&D game. Well, here are a few ways to get stoked about preparing and playing your next Dungeons & Dragons session.

Top 10 ways to get pumped up for your next D&D game

  1. Watch Rocky. That movie pumps me up like nothing else. If I’m short on time I fast-forward to the final few scenes – including the training and workout montage. Aren’t training montages great?
  2. Exercise. Sometimes I have to get the blood flowing back to the brain.
  3. Don’t think too much. Just sit down and write! It usually works.
  4. Set lofty goals. This can be a goal for your campaign or even for your RPG career. If you come up with truly great material you could get published – or publish yourself thanks to the internet.
  5. Watch Lord of the rings. This supposes that you have 8 or 9 hours of free time. Gee – I miss college!
  6. Steal ideas. Like the book you’re reading? The movie you’re watching? Copy it! Nobody will mind (unless you plan on publishing it – see #4)
  7. Threaten your players. You’ll have to be especially careful or your characters will all die next game. You can say it jokingly, half-jokingly, or seriously. It always gets attention!
  8. Wait until the last minute. There’s no better time to be productive!
  9. Add a new player. It’s a nice way to spice up your game. I know I like to impress newcomers and make a good first impression.
  10. Drink coffee. Sweet, sweet caffeine!

    Watch… “Rocky” ?!!!?
Give me a second while I cut my own wrists…
    ;PPPP
    I think I’ll settle for the coffee…
As to “threatening the players”… last time I did it I got my ass kicked really hard. I caught their attention and they responded by acting really coordinated in batlle scenes!

My advice: since we’re short on time, just place some headphones and instead of watching LOTR, listen to the soundtracks… THAT’ll get your adrenaline pumping! ;)

I admit that of all the movies out there Rocky is an odd choice, but I must have seen it 20 times and it still motivates me. It won an oscar for best screenplay so I’m not completely insane.

I like the soundtrack idea. Braveheart could also be a good way to get excited about a game.

Hey, let’s show some love for the Italian Stallion, shall we? I have a CD filled with music from various Rocky and/or martial arts movies (anything by Stan Bush. And if I need to get my ass in gear for whatever reason, it’s a good kickstart.

Now, granted, I do karate so I frequently use this to help ME train. However, having taken an equal number of levels in D&D nerd, it’s damn near impossible for me to do this without thinking of whipping the collective porcine asses of a horde of orcs. (Yes, my fellow karateka look at me funny and back away if I talk about this. Well, except Dante. :) )

Writer’s block comes when you’re out of inspiration. If you can get fired up, it’s like throwing dynamite into a logjam. (Even if what gets you fired up doesn’t have a damn thing to do with what you need to be creative for!)

That was a great speech! I might even read it to get pumped up in the future!

And thanks for backing my love of the Italian Stallion!

I would agree that Rocky is a weird choice. Die Hard much better to get psyched up for action. And if you don’t have time for LOTR, then I’d recommend Braveheart, or at least the soundtrack…although I once had a roomate that would put on the Braveheart soundtrack whenever he had over a “lady friend” for the evening…so I have to get past that to really get thrilled by Braveheart soundtrack.

“10. Drink coffee. Sweet, sweet caffeine! ”

LMFAO! ahh god if not for coffee, I’d think i would have killed all my players by now lol…

I always watch the Dungeons And Dragons Experience on YouTube. Works every time ;). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3c8vhub_vMI
